Supper with Bart’s Electives

On Monday 8 July we hosted a dinner at Founders' Hall to hear reports from the medical elective students we supported for international placements from Bart’s Hospital. The evening provided a platform for these students to share their experiences and insights gained from observing and participating in medical systems around the world.

The students in attendance were:

  • Yakshi Aggarwal - Focused on A&E and Tropical Diseases in Vietnam

  • Lucy Kay Carr-Knox - Concentrated on General Surgery and Infectious Disease in Sri Lanka and India

  • Madeleine Jones - Specialised in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in Vietnam

  • Maximilian Paley - Studied Orthopaedics in Belize

  • Liam Vandamme - Engaged in Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Obstetrics, and Gynaecology in Wales and Zambia

  • Abdelmadjid Zinet - Focused on Ophthalmology in Malaysia

During their reports, the students highlighted the stark contrasts between the medical facilities they visited and the NHS. Despite these challenges, the students reported gaining a profound understanding of how to enhance their medical skills in resource-limited settings. They also had the opportunity to explore and enjoy the cultures and landscapes of the countries they visited, adding a rich personal dimension to their professional experiences.

We are additionally grateful to Stephen Jeffries, who’s interest in the program encouraged a match funded donation from his previous company Doxy.me - meaning we were able to double the number of electives able to participate this year.
